Candida Overgrowth, Signs and Symptoms

Candidiasis is a fungal infection which can occur in either the genital or intestinal tracts and, if left untreated, can allow the fungus, or candida, to overgrow and spread systemically throughout the body. It is more prevalent in individuals where there is already a compromised immune system, presence of cancer or for those who are inflicted with AIDS. It is a highly opportunistic fungus. Oropharyngeal (oral thrush) or vaginal infections are the most common symptomatic forms of candidiasis.

In cases of thrush, the surface areas around the lips, cheeks and palate are affected. The symptoms are little white patches with red inflamed areas with occasional slight bleeding.

In vaginal candidiasis, more commonly known as a yeast infection, there is usually mild to moderate itchiness and soreness in the vaginal area. There is often a burning sensation upon urination and pain during intercourse. A cheese-like discharge is quite often associated with a yeast infection as well.

Often, candida develops into a more chronic state. Symptoms can be widely varied and affect various organ systems. Symptoms include:
