Chiropody E-mail

Pronounced Ker-aw'-po-dee, it is the study of podiatric medicine which means the knowledge and understanding of conditions that result in pain or deformity of the foot. The clinical practice includes a holistic approach by the combination of assessment, management and prevention of diseases, disorders or dysfunction of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic or palliative means.

What conditions do you treat?

  • tinea pedis (Athlete’s foot)
  • onychomycosis (fungal toe nails)
  • onychocryptosis (ingrown toe nails)
  • verrucae pedis (plantar warts)
  • heloma durum (corns)
  • hyperkeratosis (callus)
  • heel fissures (cracks)
  • hyperhidrosis (sweaty feet)
  • bromhidrosis (odorous feet)
  • anhidrosis (dry feet)
  • plantar fasciitis (heel/arch pain)
  • metatarsalgia (generalized forefoot pain)
  • foot injuries
  • diabetic foot conditions
  • arthritic foot conditions

What therapeutic modalities do you use?
We use conservative approaches such as debridement techniques, topical medicaments, wound care, massage, mobilizations, reflexology, hydrotherapy, exercises/stretching, clinical padding, insoles, taping/bracing, orthotic devices, and patient education. An individual management plan will be created and discussed with you.

What is your training?
A Chiropodist is a registered healthcare professional and governed by the College of Chiropodist of Ontario (www.cocoo.on.ca). A Chiropodist has completed a recognized three year diploma program and usually has obtained a previous three/four year degree program from a recognized university.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Not usually as Chiropodists are primary care practitioners. If you have third party insurance be sure to refer to your plan in case it requires a doctor’s referral for full re-imbursement.

Is Chiropody covered by OHIP?
Although Chiropody is not covered under any provincial healthcare plan, you may be covered in part or full if you have an extended health care insurance plan. Please check with your insurance provider to see if you are eligible to submit claims for Chiropody or Podiatric services.
